What to Ask Before You Agree to Implant Treatment

You are not being difficult. You are buying something complicated and long.

Implant consultations move quickly, and it is easy to leave with a figure and no idea what it covers. Take a written list in. Nobody worth seeing will mind.

About the plan itself

What did the imaging show, and can you show me on the scan. Why this approach rather than the alternatives. What has to happen before placement — extraction, grafting, anything else. What is the sequence from here to a finished tooth, laid out as a calendar rather than a list.

About the scope of the quote

What exactly is in this number and what is not. Are imaging, extraction, grafting, the abutment, the crown, the temporary and the follow-up visits included. What changes the number, and by how much. What am I paying and when.

About the people

Who is placing the implant. Who is restoring it. How many do you place in a month. What is your training in this specific work. Who covers if you are away partway through my treatment.

About what happens if it does not go to plan

What do you do if the implant does not integrate. Who pays for what in that situation. Is any part of the work warranted, in writing, and for how long. What is the follow-up schedule afterward and what does maintenance cost.

A note on pressure

A consultation that ends with a discount that expires today is telling you how that office operates. Implant treatment is a months-long commitment. Any office confident in its plan will still be there next week when you have thought about it or seen someone else.
